Volunteer Opportunities

SafeGames 2010 Goal: To assist adults celebrate safely during Vancouver’s winter games and to promote harm reduction.*

*Harm reduction, or harm minimisation, refers to a range of pragmatic and evidence-based public health policies designed to reduce the harmful consequences associated with drug use and other high -risk activities.

1) Opportunity: SafeGames’ Representative

Position: Volunteer
Time: At least two separate four-hour shifts between February 12th to 28th, plus a two-hour training session

Description: Outreach workers will work the crowds during the day and evening and/or the clubs in the evening and early mornings. They will deliver a variety of information and referrals on safer sex and drug use – including safer alcohol use – to Winter Games revellers. Volunteers will also distribute SafeGames SafeKits, condoms, lubricant, glow sticks, informational brochures, hand-heaters, and other fun incentives.

Requirements: Volunteers understand that humans have a fundamental right over their own bodies, and can understand and competently represent harm reduction services and practices – we will cover this in our training session. Workers must also be able to talk comfortably with strangers about sex, drugs and alcohol, and be comfortable around persons of varying religious, cultural, and sexual lifestyles. Volunteers should also be encouraging of informative, open dialogue and consultation.

2) Opportunity: SafeKit Assembly

Position: Volunteer
Time: At least two separate four-hour shifts before February 12th

Description: Volunteers will be needed for assistance in assembling the SafeGames SafeKits in advance of the Olympics – carefully filling re-sealable plastic bags with condoms, lubricant, hand warmers, glow sticks, and information cards.

3) Opportunity: SafeGames Super-Hero

Position: Volunteer
Time: At least two separate four-hour shifts between February 12th to 28th, plus a two-hour training session

Description: SafeGames super-heroes will help promote the SafeGames 2010 initiative around town at various Olympic-related events, sharing their spirit and enthusiasm for harm reduction. There is no limit to the type of SafeGames super-hero you can be; examples include: Captain Condom, Methadone Man, Buprenorphine Babe, Epidemiology Guy, Etymology Lad, Bi-Curious, the Caped and Always Protected Crusader etc.

Requirements: SafeGames super-heroes will need to be high energy, positive, enthusiastic individuals who are not afraid to draw attention to themselves. Super-heroes should also be able to understand and competently represent harm reduction services and practices – we will cover this in our training session. Volunteers must also be able to talk comfortably with strangers about sex, drugs and alcohol, and be comfortable around persons of varying religious, cultural, and sexual lifestyles. Volunteers should also be encouraging of informative, open dialogue and consultation.
